Event Details
Join Carolyn Vaughan and Michele Elliot for a contemplative workshop in a supportive space that explores the tradition of shroud-making and opens up conversations around death and dying.
Shrouds have played an important role in caring for the deceased for a very long time. The washing and wrapping of the body is often the last act of care given to a person before they are farewelled.
The day will consist of supported discussion and reflection around end-of-life care, give attention to grief, to celebration and to ‘going-away’ outfits. Working with natural materials, we will guide you through the planning and design of a simple shroud and provide hands-on sewing instruction, embellishments, embroidery and practical tips. This workshop will support you to create a bespoke cloth with intention and care that will be gifted to Tender Funerals.
All materials will be provided, and if you have your own sewing kit, you’re welcome to bring that along.
The completed shrouds will be gifted to Tender Funerals.
Bring your own lunch, creativity and questions.
Carolyn Vaughan is a trained and experienced End of Life Doula, Community Educator and Death Café Facilitator working in the Illawarra Region of NSW. She provides non-medical support and guidance to individuals, their families and carers as they navigate the end-of-life process, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of dying. The focus of Carolyn’s doula work lies in supporting people to build their knowledge and understanding of the end-of-life space, including after death, so that they develop an increased sense of choice, capacity, and control in how they choose to embrace and navigate this time in their life.
Michele Elliot is a visual artist, educator and occasional writer based in the Illawarra whose practice spans over three decades. Her artwork extends to installation, drawing and textiles and comes out of practice-led research that focuses on materiality and meaning. She runs a Sewing Circle for Tender Funerals, a not-for-profit organisation in Port Kembla. Michele completed a Master of Fine Art, Sculpture at Monash University and has exhibited widely across Australia, in India and Singapore. www.micheleelliot.com
