Did you know? Shellharbour once had its own theatre! ๐๏ธ๐ฌ
On the corner of Addison and Sophia Streets land was donated by the Hicks Bros (bacon curers of Shellharbour) to build a Temperance Hall in the 1880s.
The foundation stones were laid in 1882 and opened in 1883, the hall became the Pictorium in the 1920s, screening silent films ๐ฅ later known as the Empire Theatre, showing talking movies until 1960. ๐

๐โจ The โWheels of Windang Islandโ are a fascinating reminder of a bold idea that never quite came to life. Back in the late 1800s, Windang Island was at the centre of ambitious plans to mine coal and build a harbour within Lake Illawarra. A tie wall was even built from the island, with rails and trolleys used to haul rock for the break wall. But heavy seas, financial troubles, and time put an end to the project, leaving behind the wheels that you can still see today.
Today, Windang Island is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including the Superb Fairy-wren, Willy Wagtail ๐ฆ
A place where history meets nature, Windang Island is a little piece of Shellharbourโs story waiting to be explored ๐ฟ๐
